As a New Year’s resolution, I’m challenging myself to post one picture every day for the full 365 days of 2010. I already know it will be impossible when we’re traveling – especially during the summer when I’m touring in Alaska, but when I miss days, I hope to make up for them as soon as I can get Internet access again.
This project does not mean I’m going to get outside everyday and to get photos – on the contrary. Here in Washington state it is sometimes impossible to get outside. Even today – the first day of the challenge – is one of those wet, windy, gray days that does not lend itself to photography. So for today I had to be content to do something indoors.
We are painting one of our spare bedrooms, so I though maybe I’d take a photo of that operation, but that wasn’t very interesting. Then I thought about what I’ve been learning lately about the wireless Nikon Creative Lighting system and decided to set up my Speedlights 600 and 800 in our own bedroom and see what I could get. We painted this room recently also and put in a whole new color scheme, so since I don’t have any photos of it yet, it seemed like a good choice.
So here is a shot I took with the 800 light bouncing off the ceiling on the left and a softbox placed high right on a light stand with the 600. I know it’s not perfect. But it’s a start. I have lots to learn yet and truthfully, I’m already wanting a third Speedlight! But I’m thrilled to just have figured out how to use the lights wirelessly and off camera. I can’t wait to get the extra bedroom finished because that is to become a small studio and I’ll be trying some portrait work in there with the Speedlights.
